Donald Trump filed a lawsuit against The New York Times and its journalists

2025.09.16

He accused the publication of slander, defamation, and a "decade-long campaign of lies," demanding $15 billion

The US President went to court with a lawsuit for slander and defamation against The New York Times for $15 billion,

"This is not journalism, but a mouthpiece for radical left Democrats," Trump stated on his social network Truth Social, noting that the publication conducted a "decade-long campaign of lies" against him. He also called NYT "one of the worst and most degenerative newspapers in the country's history."

As writes the Washington Post, Trump named The New York Times and journalists Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, Peter Baker, and Michael S. Schmidt as defendants. Penguin Random House, the publisher of a book titled "The Happy Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father's Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success," co-authored by Craig and Buettner, is also named as a defendant.

In the 85-page lawsuit, Trump claims that the publications by the newspaper and its publisher Penguin Random House contain "disparaging distortions and fabrications" written with the intent to cause him maximum harm. According to him, these materials have severely damaged his personal and business reputation, as well as caused enormous economic damage, particularly the decrease in the stock value of Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG).

The articles about Trump's ties with Jeffrey Epstein and an article before the 2024 elections calling him "unfit for office" were also reasons for the lawsuit.

This is not Trump's first lawsuit against the media. Previously, he filed a lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal for $10 billion on similar charges related to the Epstein case.

In August, Donald Trump stated that ABC and NBC channels spread "fake news" and cover his work biasedly. Therefore, he called on the Federal Communications Commission to revoke their licenses.
