The two other defendants — leaders of BORN Nikita Tikhonov and Ilya Goryachev — were sentenced to life imprisonment

Evgenia Khasis, convicted in the case of the murder of "Novaya Gazeta" journalist Anastasia Baburova and lawyer Stanislav Markelov, was released after 16 years of imprisonment, reported "RIA Novosti" citing court materials. Khasis was released from a women's correctional colony in Mordovia, and administrative supervision was established over her at the end of August.

Freelance correspondent for "Novaya Gazeta" Anastasia Baburova and lawyer Stanislav Markelov were shot on January 19, 2009, in the center of Moscow as they were returning from a press conference dedicated to the fate of one of the antifascists. According to the investigation, one of the leaders of the Combat Organization of Russian Nationalists (BORN) Nikita Tikhonov and his common-law wife Evgenia Khasis committed the murder in retaliation for Markelov's antifascist activities.

In 2011, the court sentenced Tikhonov to life imprisonment, and Khasis to 18 years in a colony. In 2022, the Supreme Court reduced Khasis's term from 18 to 17 years, excluding the punishment for illegal arms trafficking due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. The remaining term concerned only complicity in the murder of Markelov — Baburova's death was qualified as "Tikhonov's excess of execution."

The organizer of the murder of Baburova and Markelov was recognized as another BORN leader, Ilya Goryachev. In 2015, the court found him guilty of organizing five murders, creating the extremist group BORN, and illegal possession of weapons, sentencing him to life imprisonment.
