At the UN Security Council meeting, the US joined a joint statement on Russia's violation of international law and the UN Charter following the incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace. "The United States supports its NATO allies in light of these alarming airspace violations," — cites Reuters the acting US ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea.
As the agency notes, these words were meant to reassure Washington's NATO allies after US President Donald Trump stated on Thursday that the alleged incursion of a Russian drone into Poland might have been a mistake.
Shea also noted that Russia intensified bombings in Ukraine after Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska for a peaceful resolution of Moscow's three-year war in Ukraine. "These actions, now compounded by the violation of a US ally's airspace — intentional or not — demonstrate extreme disrespect for the US's good faith efforts to end this conflict," the diplomat reported.
Polish State Secretary Marcin Bosacki reiterated that the drone attack on Poland was intentional and demonstrated photographs of the downed drone, drawing attention to the Russian inscriptions on its parts.
Russian representative Vasily Nebenzya initially stated that "there were no targets on Polish territory," and then claimed that "the maximum range of the drones used in this attack did not exceed 700 kilometers, making it physically impossible for them to reach Polish territory."
Nebenzya also informed the UN Security Council that Moscow is ready to negotiate with Poland, "if the Polish side is truly interested in reducing tensions, rather than escalating them."
The joint statement condemning Russia's actions against Poland and the "aggressive war against Ukraine" was supported by 43 countries.
