2025.08.22

This Friday, a music blogger, a Buryat activist, a protopriest, an Islamic TV channel, and a Russian book publisher abroad were also declared 'foreign agents'.

Former Kremlin advisor, political analyst Sergey Markov, according to the Ministry of Justice, participated in the creation and dissemination of materials from 'foreign agents' and 'undesirable' organizations, and also participated as a respondent on information platforms provided by foreign media. In addition, he 'spread false information about the decisions made by the public authorities of the Russian Federation and their policies'.

Music blogger Dmitry Nyuberg and Buryat activist Rajana Dugarova, in addition to discrediting Russian authorities, were also accused of an anti-war stance and 'forming a negative image of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. Dugarova also called for 'violating the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation'.

Protopriest Andrey Kordochkin, who openly criticized the Russian Orthodox Church MP, according to the department, spread false information not only about the Russian authorities but also about the Russian Orthodox Church.

The internet-broadcasting Islamic TV channel 'Alif TV' and the project for publishing books in Russian abroad 'Tamizdat' were included in the Ministry of Justice's list for spreading materials from 'foreign agents' and 'undesirable' organizations, and 'Tamizdat' was noted for its anti-war stance.

The unified register of 'foreign agents' has been maintained since December 1, 2022, and includes individuals, registered and unregistered non-commercial and non-governmental organizations. There are over a thousand entries in the register.

'Foreign agents' are required to publish texts and messages with a notification that they are produced by a 'foreign agent'. Fines are provided for evading the duties of a 'foreign agent', and repeated violations of the law result in criminal liability.

The State Duma passed a law prohibiting the placement of advertisements with 'foreign agents', and 'foreign agents' themselves are prohibited from participating in elections. Also, all income of 'foreign agents' in Russia, including the sale and rental of real estate, will be deposited into a special ruble account, which can only be accessed after the 'foreign agent' status is removed.
