Today, the European Parliament approved a resolution on Georgia, stating the non-recognition of the parliamentary election results and demanding a new vote. The resolution was supported by 444 deputies, 72 voted against, and 82 abstained.
Due to widespread violations, the legitimacy of the elections is in doubt, so the international community should not recognize their results, the document notes, suggesting new elections be held within a year under strict international supervision to ensure their transparency and compliance with democratic standards.
The resolution also calls on the European Union to impose personal sanctions against Georgian officials and political party leaders accused of deviating from democracy, violating electoral laws, abusing administrative resources, and using state institutions for their interests. The list includes, in particular, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Tbilisi Mayor and Secretary General of the "Georgian Dream" party Kakha Kaladze, Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, and former Prime Minister and oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili.
In addition, the resolution proposes to review the visa-free regime for Georgian citizens, up to its temporary suspension. The document is advisory in nature but may influence decisions made by European countries regarding Georgia.
Today, the Georgian parliament, in which only "Georgian Dream" deputies participate since opposition parties did not recognize the election results, approved the new government headed by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, who immediately announced that Georgia is suspending discussions on joining the European Union until 2028. He called the discussion of negotiations with the EU "a tool for pressure and societal division." Also, according to him, Georgia is refusing European budget grants.
